Representative Akasha Lawrence Spence joins John Washington and Fawn Aberson for a conversation on the Black Beat Podcast.

Oregon House Representative Akasha Lawrence Spence (D) of District #36 serves Portland’s West Side. This includes the Downtown, SW Waterfront and Chinatown areas as well as parts of the NW & SW Hills and Multnomah Village. She was appointed by Multnomah County Commissioners to replace former state Rep. Jennifer Williamson, D-Portland, who resigned in December of 2019 to run for Oregon secretary of state in the 2020 election. Representative Lawrence Spence will hold this position until January of 2021, choosing not to run in the general election. In the Legislature, she strive to create a new level of transparency, engagement, and accountability in the public sphere, centering the voices of the underrepresented and marginalized, a platform she championed during her tenure on The City of Portland's Planning and Sustainability Commission. A transplant from Brooklyn, NY where she worked for Senator Chuck Schumer and a variety of other political campaigns, she became unfulfilled with bipartisan politics and decided to pursue architecture and design instead, and relocated to Portland, Oregon. She is the Founder & Principal Designer of Fifth Element and the founder and President of Melanated a women/femme of color (WFOC) organization, over 250 members strong, based on 3 pillars - civic engagement, financial empowerment, and community stewardship. Everything she focuses on is around economic justice, believing that you can’t have environmental or social justice without it. She joins our host, John Washington, in a conversation that is intellectually empowering and, as always, unapologetically Black in nature. They cover subjects that range from the fear of Black males; the economics of Covid-19; why Black people need to own more buildings; and how politics is in EVERYTHING.

Apathy is a disease of the spirit, diminishing all manner of belief in one’s self and ability. For too long it has run rampant in Black and other communities of color, fueled by the constant drip of inequitable distribution of wealth creation opportunities and the systemic invalidation of our presence. This has created serious fragmentation. It took a special set of circumstances to create this condition and it will take a special set of circumstances to remove this blight of spirit.
Led by Flossin Media’s CEO & Editor in Chief John Washington, Black Beat takes his unapologetically Black approach to each discussion for a deep dive into the core issues that have historically divided us all.
Our featured conversers will include local, regional and national Black news-makers representing views from the hood, to the boardroom and beyond in order to disrupt the traditional “white noise” and bougie rhetoric. Episodes will also feature other Flossin Media/ Magazine writers who are well stoked by the fire their leader has ignited. Always inspirational, educational and motivational, Black Beat will empower listeners to solution oriented action and reinforce the perceptions of capability, significance and influence that lives within us all and grows exponentially if nurtured.

Demarkus Jackson is a rising basketball star from the South Central Los Angeles. He wants to leverage his talent to move up in the world and impress the scouts checking him out for recruitment. But he's hampered at home by his bitter now-alcoholic father, Reggie, who was also a former basketball star. His father is intensely jealous of his son's talent, and seeks to sabotage his prospects when the scout visits the family at home. When the visit goes awry and the ensuing fight becomes abusive, Demarkus decides to seek revenge. This brooding family drama -- directed by Xavier Burgin from a script written by Tiara Marshall -- is about how trauma, anger and pain are transmitted between generations, and how the burdens and resentments of the past shape the choices and possibilities of the future. The background may be basketball, but the focus is on the fractious, difficult nature of family bonds beset by poverty, resentment and mistrust. The throughlines of the film are cleanly established, with skillful writing deftly building character and motivation and offering just enough background for viewers to understand just what the stakes are for Demarkus. He's looking for a way out, and in many volatile, tense scenes, we see exactly why he's so desperate to escape from. The performances as a whole are thoroughly committed, and lead actors Mike Wade as Demarkus and Kent Faulcon as his father Reggie show just how dysfunctional yet intertwined this family is. Much of the film is shrouded in shadows, with a moody, almost oppressive darkness that hangs heavily over much of the story. The look and feel is almost noirish, and when the action takes a darker, more violent turn, the visual approach suits the emotional tenor of the film well, especially as the conflict between father and son escalates and Demarkus makes a shocking choice that may endanger everything he's fought so hard to create for himself. A semifinalist at the 43rd Student Academy Awards, "Olde E" at its core about family and legacy, and how past generations' unresolved business -- and poverty and violence -- perpetuate themselves in a cycle. Breaking this cycle is beyond difficult and painful, and "Olde E" offers a perceptive and insightful look at just why cycles are so hard to shatter: why moving on and up can feel like abandonment to those still mired in the past, and how bitterness can rise to such venomous levels that it sabotages the usual parental desire to want what's best for a child. It's painful to watch, but with unflinching courage, the film forces us to take a closer, compassionate look at the emotional roots of generational violence and poverty, how deeply parents can damage their children -- and how part of growing up is learning to separate your self from your background and family legacy.

Ram Jhula is the name of a bridge, that crosses Ganga in Rishkesh, north India...
When I visited India, I used to cross this bridge, this sacred river every day...
Every time I crossed Ganga, many questions, inspirations and answers used to come to me.
Many sounds... and words... and finally silence...
I just wanted to go down, down the river...
I think a part of me just follows these waters...

Ricardo and I took 3.5 days off to explore some of the area around Esteli and then to visit his other two children in Boaco. AJ Fernandez Cigars is amazing! They are part of the Free Trade Zone area so they can't sell their cigars in Nicaragua for tax reasons but they are a major producer of hand rolled cigars.
